With
the dawn of the Millennium, we look to the future and reconsider the
wisdom of the past. Ancient civilizations believed physical beauty
externally represented one's balance with nature. In fact, the word
"cosmetics" comes from the Greek kosmetikos, which means harmony with the
universe.
Women around the world have used nature to enhance
their beauty in a variety of ways:
-
Almonds. Cultivated throughout the
Mediterranean, almond oil is believed to soothe dry skin.
-
Avocado. Since pre-Colombian times,
Latin American women have used the the inside of the avocado skin to
exfoliate while adding vitamin E to their complexions.
-
Cocoa
Butter. A beauty staple of Tahitian women, cocoa butter is
believed to counteract the drying effects of salt air, intense sun and
extreme weather conditions.
-
Honey. For centuries, Colombian
women have used honey as a face mask to cleanse and moisturize their skin.
-
Milk. For centuries, ancient
Egyptians used milk to smooth and rejuvenate dry, lifeless skin. And
legend has it that Cleopatra bathed in milk for this reason.
-
Oatmeal. Scottish, Irish and Indian
women have used oatmeal to soften their complexions for countless years.
Gentle and mild, it is believed to comfort sensitive skin.
